Movie That is Worthwhile

HELLO FOLKS — Some people are like the wheelbarrow — not useful unless pushed, also easily upset.

—o—

IT IS NOT what men eat but what they digest that makes them strong; not what we gain, but what we save that makes us rich; not what we read, but what we remember that makes us learn; and not what we preach, but what we practice that makes us Christians – Francis Bacon.

IT SEEMS THAT we are entering a stage of ever greater extremes in many ways.

I am thinking now of the movie industry, especially. We had the privilege of seeing the new show, "Ben-Hur". For the benefit of those who have not seen it, I say, "don't miss it." I believe it is superior to "The Ten Commandments", and probably superior, in moral behavior, to any movie I have seen. It has a wonderful message, an interesting story and the filming is as good as I have seen. It was produced in the best of taste.

We know that many of the movies now-a-days are extremely vulgar. We don't go to any that we think are that way.

However, the other night I was spending the evening away from home. Had nothing in particular to do so decided to take in a show. The only one we thought was worth seeing was a black and white film that is supposed to be good. Since the main actor has passed away since the film was produced we went to see that one.

I was throughly disgusted with it, and quite ashamed to even be there seeing it. Apparently there is no more censorship in Hollywood. The well known actress starring in it apparently can't act anything but what she naturally is, and that is not good.

It was not just my opinion; there were several of us there and that was the concensus. The show is just about as debasing as it could be, and I am sure that any actor or actress with any sense of decency would not have permitted themselves to act in such a picture.

Even the directing was poor. For instance; they had caught some wild horses and according to the plot they had a remorse of conscience and let the horses loose. Instead of taking the ropes off the hose's necks they cut the rope near the far end and the horses were let loose in the desert with a lariat dragging from the for at least 20 feet. I know a little bit about the west and I know that no cowboy would ever let a horse loose with a slip rope dragging.

I think it's a shame that such pictures are produced. They burrow at the very root of civilization and break down the morals of our youth.

We don't go to movies much these days but I understand that this one is pretty typical of what is happening to a lot of movies.

One observation I would like to make is that religious movies, when well produced, are the most popular. Shows such as "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur" are breaking all records for continuous running. This is a good indication for the future of movies.

Negroes Learning

HELLO FOLKS — "In Lincoln's time the question was whether the sovereignty of the States would destroy the sovereignty of the Union. Today it is the opposite, whether the concentration of federal power will destroy state and local responsibility and thus destroy the nation and the Constitution."
... Governor George Romney.

—o—

ALABAMA, CIVIL RIGHTS, voting rights, etc, have been on most peoples' lips the past few weeks; so I might as well indulge in it, too.

Whether or not we agree that the Negro should be doing many of the things he is doing now— sit-ins, sit-downs, marches, boycots or what-have-you—there is one aspect that hasn't been brought out.

For a century the Negro has made very slow progress in orienting himself with the white man's environment and behavior. How much of this is his fault and how much of it is the fault of white domination is hard to say and not for me to determine. Having never lived in the South, nor among Negroes, makes me unqualified to judge.

Doing Better
Now the Negro is doing something about his condition. Whether or not it is the right thing is not the most important factor. What is important is that he is doing something, and it should all be for the good.

The Negro is not apt to be as indifferent in the future as he had been in the past. He is being challenged today as never before.

He is more likely to think, act, and do things now.

The admirable this is that he...

Once of the big things being taught is that it must be "civil" disobedience, not "violent" disobedience. This alone teaches an important factor — self-control. From all I can gather much of the Negro population in the past has had a high degree of that social element.

More Leadership
Many actions being taken are bound to generate some more leadership. The Civil Rights Law will leave the Negro without an excuse for no self-development. The leaders know this and are preparing their people for it. This means there will be many more educated people among them. All this action should provide a real catalyst for the youth.

While it might seem to us that the Federal Government has done a lot in the way of encouragement for the Negro, there is a lot more that should be done.

For instance, there is a high per cent of the race on direct welfare. If the right attitudes were promoted there would be a minimum of rioting and associated evils. Welfare recipients should be in jeopardy of losing their eligibility by taking part in violent disturbances of permitting member of their...

Don't Underrate Your Opponent

Hello Folks! — A man makes his biggest mistake when he thinks he is more shrewd than the man he is dealing with.

O. J. Arlein of the Farm Bureau Service Co. tells a story about his little boy. He wanted to play a game, his father being very busy as the moment, and seeing a picture of the world in a magazine decided to teach his son while he was also playing. He cut the map in pieces and then asked the son to put them back together again.

In a short while the boy was back with the puzzle all together. Asked father, "How did you do it so fast". "That was easy father". beamed the boy. "There was a pictures of a farmer on the other side of the world; I just put him together and the world turned out right".

There is a lot of parallel in this incident with the real life. We have at times heard the saying "As the farmer goes so goes the world." Today the farmer is the largest segment of our economy that really knows what is to be free to do as he pleases.

The enemies of freedom know that as long as farmers remain free to plow, plant, plan and progress as he wishes they cannot slam the gates of enslavement on us. That is the biggest reason why there is so much commotion over the farmer's plight. True, the farmers are having a tough time of it, but it is that way in any business. We are in tough competition with each other and it isn't going to get much better; the politician not withstanding.

Some politicians cry "crocodile tears" for the farmer in order to get votes and then there are others ... cians who cry the same kind of tears in other to drum up support to put the farmer in subjugation to the dictates of big government. Both kinds are dangerous; the one without realizing it is heading the nation toward the brink of disaster and the other by deliberate methods is doing the same.

Ma, "she shocks me every time I see her." Pa, "She should, every, stitch on her is charged."

One of the biggest gains to be made by farmers in the next few years is "quality control". It is coming just as sure as anything and it is to the best interest of everyone.

Milk and eggs are the two most perishable crops we have. There is hardly anything as good as a good fresh egg nor as bad as a bad one. The same goes for milk.

Last summer a family moved into our neighborhood; they asked to buy eggs from us. At first they bought only 2 or 3 dozen a week but soon they were buying 7 or 8 dozen per week. We wondered about it and the reason they gave was that they had taken a liking to eggs that were fresh. We visited them one evening and the children were frying eggs galore. Which just goes to show what quality in a product can do.

If such a change can come in eating habits of a family around here where it is comparatively easy to get fresh products what won't it do to the people in large cities?

Quality is also one of the limiting factors in our export markets that need attention. I think that in the production of eggs, as in milk, quick cooling and general quality control is going to pay off...
